Kitchen And Bath Remodeling Cabinets

   By: Quinn Redmond

Kitchen and bath remodeling is a popular way to update your home and had resale value to your current property. However, due to issues with plumbing and the number of fixtures and appliances that are involved, kitchen and bath remodeling can quickly become an expensive endeavor. One way to give these important and much-used rooms in your home a whole new look with less money is to consider a cabinet redo. Since cabinetry is one of the primary accessories in these rooms, refinishing or updating your cabinets will give your space a modern look with less expense. This project can be a time-intensive one though, so it is best to evaluate your cabinets carefully before putting any effort in to refinish them, to ensure that the current cabinets are worth your labor.

While some kitchen and bath remodeling projects can be as easy as a container of mineral spirits and some paint, you want to make sure that the time you spend updating your current cabinetry will be worthwhile. Inspect your current cabinets carefully; to ensure that potential problems like gaps between the cabinetry and the wall, doors that do not hang properly and drawers that do not open easily will not continue to be an issue after refinishing. It is also possible that some of the older cabinets simply will not refinish cleanly, leaving your hard labor for naught. If, after careful inspection, you determine that a cabinet refinish will indeed be an effective method of kitchen and bath remodeling, you can proceed with a variety of choices in finishes and hues.

Refinishing Techniques

There are many ways to remodel a kitchen or bath with a cabinet redo, and not all are simply a matter of a new coat of paint. If your cabinets are dirty and greasy, a good bleaching may be the first step in giving those worn cabinets a new look. A solution of bleach, linseed oil and boiling water will thoroughly clean your cabinets and brighten their appearance. If bleaching is not sufficient, you can follow up by stripping the old finish or paint from the wood and applying a new finish. If you like your wood color and grain, you can simply stain the wood and add a coat or two of polyurethane to protect the finish. If you prefer a whole new look, select a paint color that will coordinate with your home décor and grab a brush. With special painting techniques like sponging or rag rolling, you can add dimension and texture to your cabinets as well.

Refinishing cabinets can be a good first step or only step in kitchen and bath remodeling. Let your imagination inspire you to update your home with cabinets that are customized for your unique taste and style.
