Boats - A Brief History

   By: Nicky Patterson

In the beginning, to stay afloat on the water man used rafts made out bamboos as well as hollow logs that helped him to float on a lake or go down a river. These floating vessels were made from hand and were used for fishing as also for pleasure and they easily floated about on waters that were not too rough and which did not have very fast currents. The evolution of such floating vessels has continued from that time and now-a-days we find synthetic materials being used that are making boats more luxurious as well as pleasurable.

Origins of the Word

To understand what a boat is, why it is so popular and necessary, and why it has become an important part of our lives we should actually delve into the origins of the word and learn why it is different to canoes and even ships. As we understand the term today, it means a vessel that has been built to transport people as well as cargo on the water and it should be buoyant, steady as well as easy to traverse the water and it can be moved in a number of different ways.

The origins of the word “boat” can be traced to the German term “bot” that meant goods as well as items being delivered and which evolved to mean a craft that made the delivery. Later, it came to mean the floating vessels as we know them today and which comprise several different types including those used for fishing, pleasure, ski, parties as also pontoon and deck boats. In fact, there are dozens of types that answer to the description of a boat and which come from all parts of the world.

You must be aware of the dinghy that is mostly less than ten feet and which is light as also portable and used not far from the shore and even in the harbor areas. Another similar vessel is the Johnboat that is used for fishing and also hunting, and they usually have an outboard motor that is quite small which propels the Johnboat forward. There are also sailboats that are used for recreation on lakes and also close to the shore and are mostly less than twenty feet long.

Boats used for fishing are bass, small family and pleasure, and trawlers. Sports fishing boats are also a combination of fishing and ski boats that are available in many different designs. These have special use, especially when it comes to being used for fishing. Other boat types include catamarans, houseboats and even flatboats. Finally, there are also yachts that are often very luxurious and owned by the rich and famous.
