If you are a person who is always amazed with how Mother Nature works, then going to national parks and wildlife may be one of your hobbies. Going to these places not only makes you feel closer to nature but also teaches you about distinct habitats where exotic and hard-to-find birds reside and sometimes, it is a great way to spend the day just bird watching and observing how these magnificent living things do their work.

Birding is the technical name for bird watching and it has been a growing hobby where nature enthusiasts and photographers. The technical name for bird watching however, is not really a popular term among many but however you may call it, it is still fun watching the birds to their routine.

Birding Versus Bird Watching

To give an overview, bird watching or birding for some people, is the observation and study of birds with the naked eye by using visual enhancements like binoculars. Most of the people who are birders or bird watchers pursue this hobby for social or recreational reasons unlike ornithologists who may be considered hardcore when it comes to studying the birds because they are known to engage in formal and scientific study of them.

There has always been a great debate about the technical name for bird watching and birders who are both in Britain and the United States always differentiate themselves from bird watchers. At the most basic level the distinction between “birders” and “bird watching” is one of dedication or intensity and they could very well be differentiated by them. As you may commonly hear it, self-described birders are more versed in minutiae such as molt, distribution, migration timing, and habitat usage. And these dedicated birders may travel widely whereas bird watchers mostly have a more limited scope, perhaps to their own gardens.

By joining these organizations, you not only know about the technical name for bird watching but also the etiquette, equipment, and competitions that have something to do with this one of a kind hobby.

You may like to know more about the British Trust for Ornithology and Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in the United Kingdom to get to know these organizations. Also, you could check out the National Audubon Society and American Birding Association in the United States. For global alliance, you could join the BirdLife International and is known to be the number one global alliance for bird conservation organizations.
