Choosing a provider for your infant day care can be very difficult, especially if the child is your first to send to day care. Many new parents do not know what factors to look at to decide which provider is right for them, and which definitely are not. There are a few key areas that parents should look at when choosing an infant day care provider.
The Day Care Workers
Perhaps the most important aspect of an infant day care provider is the workers that will actually be taking care of your infant. Parents should make sure that these individuals meet all state and local licensing requirements. They should also interview the key individuals that would be taking care of their child and make sure they seem like trustworthy people. Parents should also make sure that they get and check the references for any place they are seriously considering.
The Day Care Facilities
Parents should make sure to carefully examine any infant day care facilities that they are considering. They should check for cleanliness, safety hazards, and overall environment. Parents may wish to visit during times when children are present to see how many workers are there compared to the number of children and how the children are handled.
If the infant day care facility seems to be dirty or unsanitary, parents may wish to look elsewhere. Likewise, if the children at the facility appear to be dirtier than is reasonable, it may be a warning sign. Also, if there does not seem to be enough workers to keep up with the children present, parents should be cautious.
If there are any safety hazards, be especially careful. For example, any cleaning supplies left within reach, gates meant to keep children in that are damaged, or any items left within reach of the infants (even toys left out by older kids), should be looked for.
After Choosing a Day Care
Once parents have picked a day care, that does not mean they should leave it at that. Make sure to keep a watchful eye on your children and how clean they are kept and watch for any injuries. Also, dropping by for a surprise visit in the middle of the day occasionally is a good idea. This can help a parent to notice anything that may be hid by the time they normally pick up their child. Parents should also make sure to check on their daycare’s licensing every so often to make sure that it is in order.
