Starting School With A New Perspective

By: Chris Sussan

Once you're grown it can be a challenge to recall those younger years. I'm referring to the really younger years that occurred during the first section of life. Think 0 to age 5. Yeah, pretty far back huh? What can you seriously remember from those times? Well, one thing I do recall rather vividly is starting school. Monumental moments such as this do stick with you. In fact, it's a challenge to get rid of them. Not that you'd want to do such a thing. Come on; starting school isn't really that bad, is it?

While you may not remember your single year in kindergarten, I'll bet you recall the first grade, or at least elementary school. This was back when all was light and things were simple. Homework didn't amount to much and you actually had snack time. WOW, was that ever sweet! I honestly think snack time and nap time should be a part of every grade up until graduation. We should put this to a vote. Anyway, I'm sure you remember that time toward the end of summer break. All the routine commercials played on television, advertising back to school attire and academic supplies. We all got used to this after a few years of grade school, but we certainly dreaded it at the same time. In reality we weren't anxious to start school again. Especially since summer break flew by way too quickly. And none of us wanted to head off to the local Wal-Mart for infinite school supplies. This only meant that the new year was right upon us. In no time whatsoever we'd be awaking to the horrific scream of an alarm clock and climbing clumsily out of our beds. YUCK! The memories are flooding back in full-force now. Thank God that portion of my life is complete!

If you're having second thoughts and feelings of anxiety about starting school, I suggest a positive outlook at a wonderful new year, overflowing with exciting experiences and new friends. You can't beat the friends part. Focus on the good points and ditch the negative aspects like the alarm clock and crowded school bus. You just might even end up with a few cool school supplies. I always looked forward to those mechanical pencils.
