School Trips And Child Safety |

My daughter is finally at that age when the permission slips are coming home to be signed for school trips. I always enjoyed school trips, to anywhere, when I was a student, so I know how excited she feels. Of course, I was in school a long time ago when there just wasn’t as much to worry about as there is nowadays. Her first school trip was to a local museum and I volunteered to be a chaperone. I’ve heard too many horror stories about children being kidnapped to not want to be around her when she’s still at a young age. Teachers and schools encourage students to have the buddy system and never wander off. But, we also know how children can be defiant and not think about consequences at times. Sometimes, children end up wandering off and find themselves lost. No one may realize that until the end of the scheduled day.
I remember my school trips from my teenage years. We’d ride buses for hours to see New York City or museums. It was so much fun. I also remember how many crazy things we all used to do. There aren’t as many parents chaperoning older kids’ school trips. Perhaps there should be. So many things go on in the world today that you just want to be safe. Of course, bad things can happen even with a chaperone nearby. We all are familiar with the case of the missing Natalee Holloway. She disappeared on a school trip that was out of the country. Who should be blamed? The chaperones for letting her wander off without supervision? Natalee herself for being in that situation? Her friends for not intervening? The fact is that everyone should share in the blame. It could have happened in our own country, not just on an island. School trips can end up a bit crazier and unplanned than originally thought. My senior year, I went to Spain with about 15 students for our school trip. We had 3 chaperones and everyone had a wonderful time. Kids will be kids and some of my classmates took advantage of being out of their parents’ sights and spent their time partying.
School trips need to be carefully planned by the schools, teachers and event coordinators. There should be a system in place just in case something should go wrong. More chaperones might be necessary for some school trips. Mostly though, talk to your children about how to have a safe and fun school trip that they will remember fondly.
