All Natural Soy Candles - An Introduction

By: Sam Dillon

Are you the type who burns candles everyday and loves the delicious aromas they leave in a room? Are you tired of the mess a misplaced candle can leave? Have you ever ruined a favorite tablecloth or gotten that black soot from your favorite jar all over your clothing? Have you considered beeswax candles but found the price tag prohibitive? The answers to all of these questions and more are the reasons why all natural soy candles were invented in the first place.

Natural Candles:

Prior to the invention of all natural soy candles, there was a demand for a non-petroleum based candle that was less synthetic. In the early 1990’s, Michael Richards formed the company Candleworks` with the intent to produce candles from more natural materials. However, at that time, the only materials readily available were beeswax and bayberry wax, and both of these materials were costly.

In an attempt to make a natural candle product that wasn’t so expensive, Michael Richards began combining soybean oil with beeswax. This, essentially, was the first production of all natural soy candles! By the mid-nineties, consumers were able to purchase these and other products manufactured by Candleworks at The Body Shop.

Edible Candles:

Then, in 1996, a group of University of Purdue students attempted to develop the first edible birthday candle—yes, edible! They succeeded in winning a competition and were ultimately instrumental in bringing to the world all natural soy candles. These candles were such a hit at that competition that they were later released in the late nineties under the brand name “Harvest Lights” by the Indiana Soybean Board.

All natural soy candles burn more efficiently than their synthetic counterparts, are less expensive than their beeswax cousins, and clean up with a simple combination of soap and water. Most importantly, especially for those of us who love the rich and delicious scents a good candle can bring to a room, all natural soy candles rank right up there with the most expensive paraffin varieties when it comes to smell.

If you are interested in the lack of soot and chemicals, less expensive price tag and the same delectable scents, then make your next candle purchase an all natural soy candle. These creations may be found at most natural food markets, in some discount stores or online. With a little perseverance and patience, you too can enjoy the long burning time and natural aroma of these candles.
