Moving away to attend college is a big step for any young man or woman. They are leaving the comfort and security of their parent’s home to enter an unknown world. There are so many decisions to be made when you are going to be living in a new city. The first and arguably most important is where to live. Although many college kids opt for the dorms, that doesn’t work for everyone. With the constant noise and partying it can be very distracting for a recent high school graduate who needs a quiet space to study. Instead of constantly visiting the library and then sleeping in their dorm, they might want to consider looking for a room for rent in the same neighborhood as the college.
Many homeowners who live near large colleges or universities understand the need for affordable student housing. Often times, if a family has grown and the children have all left, the parent or parents are ready to offer a room for rent to college kids. It brings in a little extra income for them and it gives the student a quiet, home like place to live. Many kids find they flourish academically if they are living with a family as opposed to a dorm room.
Finding these types of accommodations is relatively easy. Most college kids will give up their room for rent when summer vacation arrives. The landlord or homeowner will then advertise looking for a new renter. Many college newspapers will have a list of rooms for rent, including the price, and location. This is a great resource for a student planning on using this type of housing arrangement.
Along the same lines there are sometimes older folks looking for college kids to not only rent a room but also to help with some chores. This can be beneficial to both parties and is often a great arrangement. Many mature retirees don’t want to leave the comfort of their own home for a long term facility but they are unable to handle things like clearing snow or cutting the grass. When they offer a room for rent to a student they do so with the understanding that the monthly rent will be reduced if he or she helps with those things.
If the student is fortunate enough to be moving to a city where they already have some extended family they may be able to stay with them. It’s worth a try to contact them once the student has been accepted into college and inquire if they may have a room for rent. If their home is big enough they might enjoy having the child there with them. Not only will they offer the new college student a warm place to sleep, they’ll provide the family support they are likely to be missing when they first leave home.
