Children can be very unpredictable. Through the years I have watched my children grow and mature. I have two sons and a daughter. Our daughter is our middle child. Her brothers can be quite protective of her. They are all quite athletic and fortunately their school work comes easily for them. They have each always brought great report cards home that I stopped checking on their assignments. It did not seem necessary because doing their work and turning it in had never been an issue. I was shocked when we received a letter that our daughter was failing English at mid-term.
My husband and I asked our daughter to meet with us to discuss this. She said that it was no big deal. She had to write a research paper over the course of the term and she has not found research paper topics that she and the teacher agreed with. She had picked out two different research paper topics already and both of them had been rejected by the teacher. We asked her what topics she had picked to do the research on. She said the first topic she had wanted to research was the effects of pets on the health of family members.
The other topic that interested her was the history of man taking pets into their homes. My daughter loves animals so I was not surprised that the research paper topics that she picked were involving them. She said her teacher told her that he wanted her to expand her knowledge base further. He had been her teacher in fifth grade and then he switched to tenth grade English. He told her she was writing about animals five years ago so she should pick something else. She informed him that she was planning a career working with animals and that is what she was interested in so that was what she wanted to research.
She was going forth with her assignments and had completed the outline, and turned in the titles of the articles that she had read. He was not accepting the work because the topic was not approved. We asked if we could see what she had done and what the assignment was. The assignment sheet outlines the full term. The assignment was to pick a subject that interested you, determine a topic that included the subject and turn in an outline for the paper. Then she needed to read different articles and books that would support their topic. Once they gathered the information they were to write the paper as well as a bibliography.
Everything that she had done so far followed the assignment outline. My daughter insisted it was because she had beat out the teacher’s daughter for the lead in the play that the drama club was putting on. My daughter refused to change her topic and stuck firm to her beliefs, although we ended up having to involve the principal for her to get credit for the paper.
