It is amazing to me how things work out in life. My husband and I made the huge decision to move to a lake home several years ago. This was a big decision because it meant uprooting our children from their schools and relocating in a very small community. Our two sons were excited about living on a lake because they both love to fish and hunt; however they were sad to leave their friends and a school that was very competitive in sports. It turns out that the change has benefited all of us.
The area we moved to have much smaller schools and a depressed economy. At first we thought this may effect the ability of our son’s to find part time employment in the summer months. One of our sons however found a dream job working for a fishing launch service. Our oldest son was hired by a local plumbing and heating company. When he first started the job he was the person that went for parts and did the manual labor. As he began watching the work that the plumbing and heating guys did he discovered that he was interested in learning more about wiring and how electricity works. He also discovered from the long hours that the plumbing and heating company employees put in that there is a shortage of plumbers and electricians. He started talking to the guys about the educational requirements needed to do the job.
Our son had always talked about being an attorney, so we were surprised when he told us that he wanted to apply at trade schools to become an electrician. He said that the money is good and that the job market was much better for a trained plumbing and heating guy than for an attorney. He was concerned that we would be disappointed that he did not want to pursue a professional career. We explained that job security as well as enjoyment was more important than being a professional. We told him that making an honest living working with your hands and providing a service to people is very honorable. I was sharing this with one of my friends, whose husband is an attorney. She told me that she would rather tell her friends that her son worked for a plumbing and heating company than as a lawyer. We laughed that electricians are held in higher regards than most attorneys. She also told me that there is such saturation in the legal profession that getting a job is quite difficult for a person just starting out. My son already knows that he has a job waiting for him with the plumbing and heating company when he completes his schooling.
