Offender Search To Know Who's Out There

By: Baily Richards

For anyone with children, one of the biggest fears is having someone take your child from you and hurt them. I know that before I was a parent I was always outraged by such stories, but they never hit home quite as much as they did after my daughter came into my life. It became more important to me than ever that these type of people were apprehended and sentenced. Many of them serve out their terms and then are released into the world. This means that parents have to be careful about who they trust their children with, and that they do a sex offender search within their neighborhood.

I saw a report on the news one night about a web site that offers a sex offender search for my area. I am pretty sure that no matter where you live you can find the same search online. I found that there were three registered sex offenders in my area, and they all came up on the sex offender search. This information was given to me only after I supplied my name and address to the database. They do this because even though you have a right to the information, you do not have a right to harass those people without provocation. If something were to happen to someone, they would question all of the people who did a sex offender search in that area.

After I entered my own information, I did the sex offender search for my immediate 10 mile area. I was dismayed to find that two of the three offenders in my area lived within a mile of my house. This also meant that they lived within a mile of an elementary school and six different day cares. I know in smaller areas it is harder to find a place to live that is not close to such places where children may be, but this was too close for comfort for me. The sex offender search also showed me the one offender was on my street. This made me very uneasy. Thankfully he is ten blocks away, and not right next door.

When you do a sex offender search on your area, you are doing yourself a service. Though knowing that there may be a few who live nearby is scary, it also encourages you to keep your guard up around your children. If you find that your children are walking by the residences of an offender on their way home from school, you may want to either pick them up or have them walk home a new way. A sex offender search will also tell you if there are living near your home or near your school, and this will help you make decisions in the future.
