List Of Careers For A Working Mom

By: Janet Day

Life passes by so very quickly. I try to take the time to enjoy the present and let the future take care of itself but this is not always easy for me to do. When I do take time to recall a past event I usually find myself marveling at how much time has gone by. This is especially true when it comes to my children. I have been so busy keeping up with the schedules they have that I seem to have lost parts of their childhood.

My children have always come to me with homework needs and to share information about what they are doing in classes. My son is a junior in high school and my daughter is a freshman. It seems like yesterday when we were standing at the bus stop and he was helping her get up the big step. Now he is researching a list of careers and universities that specialize in the career choice. He is getting ready to go to college and I feel like I just completed my education. I started to realize that I need to make more of an effort to concentrate on the here and now. I have been guilty of missing their sporting events and other school activities because they conflict with my busy work schedule. For each one I miss I tell myself that I will go to the next one. I now realize there are not going to be many more next times. I am regretting missing little league games and he is looking at a list of careers to go into. I made a resolution that I was going to take off more time to enjoy his last year and a half of high school, and to take in more of my daughter’s functions.

When we sat down to look at the list of careers I noticed that we had starred the ones he was most interested in. I am in marketing and my husband is an attorney, neither of these occupations had a star by them on the list of careers. I asked my son about this. He said that he thought we both had to work way to many hours so he was not interested into going into either profession. When I heard this I knew that I had to stick to my resolution to take more time off. I had fooled myself into thinking that the children did not notice how many hours I work, but obviously they have. As we went through the list of careers I explained to my son that each career has its own challenges, and demands. I told him that not everyone in my company put in as many hours as I do, it just depends upon how much you push yourself. I shared with him that I had pushed myself too hard and that this was going to end. He suggested that I should pick another profession from the list of careers, he may have a point.
