Leather Coin Purse From Mexico

By: Hunter Jones

Have you ever thought about our attraction to souvenirs? I know that the reason people want them is a reminder of a trip or vacation. But does that mean we have to have a plastic replica of what we saw on vacation? That is the part that I do not understand, after all how does a plastic bust of Mount Rushmore fit in with anyone’s living room. I like having mementos from places that I have visited, but I stay away from the items in the tourist shops and try to buy some thing that is made in the region or is indicative to the culture.

Several years ago we went to Mexico for the first time. We stayed in a nice hotel on the beach. The first day we could not figure out why people were lying around the pool instead of enjoying the beach. We took our towels and a couple of the chairs provided by the hotel and claimed a spot in the sun on the sand. In just a few minutes we were approached by the first vendor. He was selling t-shirts. We had just gotten rid of him and we were approached by a vendor with jewelry then tanning lotion then more t-shirts. We quickly learned why people were staying by the pool area; the vendors could not come on hotel property. After we soaked up some sun we went into the market area. I could not believe the wonderful leather items and the good prices on them. We did not have room in our luggage to take a great deal of stuff back. I had just bought a new purse, but I found a beautiful leather coin purse that would be light weight and small to transport home. The leather coin purse was hand tooled and made out of soft brown leather. It was fun bargaining with the vendor. The host at the hotel had told us that it is tradition to haggle over the price of goods. He also told us that most of the vendors set fair prices so that our offers should not go to low so as to be an insult.

We have gone back to Mexico many times since. I have bought a leather coin purse each time we have gone. They make great gifts and they last a long time. The leather seems to get softer with age. Also each time I reach in my purse for change I am reminded of our special time in the sun and sand. I would much rather carry a useful small leather coin purse than have some gaudy souvenir gathering dust on a shelf.
