By: Terry Olmort

When my friends used to ask me what I was going to do with a degree in English, I always used to tell them that I aspired to become a professor. However, once I discovered the lucrative editing jobs available to grammar geeks like me, my focus turned to a different aspiration. Editing jobs are not for everyone, though.

Those who are creative by nature might not like the idea of reading other people’s work without the opportunity of creating in the process. However, there are editing jobs that do allow for some writing as well. The writing that an editor does is not usually his own piece.

Duties for people who have editing jobs differ according to the publishers’ needs. For example, a newspaper will have a very different agenda than a book publishing company. It helps to know what particular field interest you before taking a leap. Considering the different aspects of editing jobs is a good place to start.

If you are interested in editing jobs that are associated with book publications be prepared to do a lot of reading. This is not a field for someone who has a short attention span. If you like to delve into a project over the course of several months, or even years, then editing jobs with book publishing firms might be right for you.

However, if you like to complete a project in little time then you might want to take another route. Instead of looking at book projects that take a good deal of time and effort to complete, you might prefer editing jobs in the field of journalism instead. This includes newspapers and magazines.

Newspaper editing jobs vary within the specific organization. For example, there is usually an executive editor and a few assistant editors for the publication. Then there may be editing jobs associated with specific subject. If you are interested in sports and you have an eye for detail you might like editing jobs in the sports section.

No matter what your interests are, you can probably find editing jobs that are right for you. However, you do have to possess certain characteristics in order to do the job well. Organization is crucial to editing positions and you definitely have to possess an eye for detail.

The meticulous nature of the editor is a quality that few people possess. If you like to scrutinize and fix mistakes, then there may be a plethora of editing jobs that are right for you.
