Hotel Management Program

By: Francis Brompton

When I told my friends that I was going into a hospitality management program, I could practically see their eyes glaze over. After all, a hotel management program is not the most exciting degree that you can get. All of my friends were studying things that were much more interesting and dynamic. One of my friends was studying art history, another one studying physics, and yet another was taking music theory. Hotel management programs didn't fit up there – I was being pragmatic and boring while they were being risky and exciting. Nonetheless, although it was hard to convince them, I was happy with what I was doing. Going into a hotel management program was the fulfillment of a dream of mine.

Of course, I wasn't aware of hotel management programs when I was a kid, but I always felt like I wanted to run a hotel. I think that my fascination with hotels, bed and breakfast is, and place like that started when I was on vacation with my family. We were in a strange old house with staircases at both the front and the back. It was easy to get confused there, and the place seemed to have so many hidden nooks and crannies that I was fascinated. I knew that one day I wanted to own a house like that myself and show people around it. They would stay with me and I would get to show them the secrets of my home. That is what inspired me originally to get into a hotel management program – that childish fascination with hidden places never left.

When I first decided to do a program hotel management, I thought of getting a distance learning degree. Distance learning was the easiest way to get my head hotel management program certification, and it would allow me to take all of my classes from the comfort of my own home. When I thought about it again, however, I realized that I would do better to take classes at an actual school. I found an MBA program with a special in hotel management, and I signed up.

The hotel hospitality program was not at all what I had thought. When I pictured a hotel management program, I figured that I would be learning a lot about the everyday routines of running a hotel. Instead, I learned about management – how to hire people and supervise them, how to make sure that the customers were happy, how to make connections with suppliers – that sort of thing. I am almost done with the hotel management program, and an anxiously awaiting my first hotel job.
