When I mention homes in Detroit to my friends, they scoff at the very least. You see, Detroit Michigan has a bad reputation. To some degree, it is deserved. It is true that a huge chunk of the population has moved out of Detroit in the past few decades. As big cities go, it is not happening place. There is very little to do, and many of the streets are deserted. This is not entirely a bad thing. If you are looking for homes for sale in Detroit, you may be in luck. You see, housing prices are so low in some parts of the city that you can find a home for sale by owner at well below the market rate in other parts of the country. If you are willing to put up with the inconveniences of living in Detroit – no public transportation, cold winters, and hot muggy summers – homes in Detroit might be worth considering.
I have been living in homes in Detroit for several years now, and all in all I like it. After all, there is no other city in the world where I would be able to afford a mansion. I live on a modest teacher's salary, and although I have a dual income household, home ownership would be a problem for me in many parts of the country. Fortunately, homes in Detroit are as cheap as dirt. If you are willing to buy a fixer-upper – as I was – you may be able to find one for even less. Yes having a home in Detroit means that you still have to live in Detroit – a major drawback for many people – but if you are looking to settle down, the Motor City can be a great first destination.
Of course, homes for rent in Detroit are a good way to start. If you are not sure whether or not you could live in Detroit, you should try it out this way first. I have some friends who live in Detroit city. Their home in Detroit has five rooms and costs them something like 800 dollars a month. In any other city that I know of, this would be unheard of. For homes in Detroit, however, this is far from rare. There are literally dozens of people on their street who have a similar situation. They live in huge – albeit decrepit – homes, and pay almost nothing.
