Many towns in the USA thrived with the coming of the railroad and this was the case for Glenwood Springs Co. The Garfield County town makes the most of its geographical location, offering some great sports and recreational facilities. It's also a fascinating area for geologists and for people who want to connect with the natural world.
The Colorado River and the Roaring Fork River converge in the town and the local residents enjoy kayaking and rafting on both rivers. Mountain bikers too enjoy living in Glenwood Springs Co and use the bike trails that go through Roaring Fork Valley. These trails do require a good level of fitness. There is a 16-mile long bike trail through Glenwood Canyon that is less challenging and it provides a great day out for families. There are rest areas along the way and bikes can be hired in the town.
One of the interesting natural features in the area can be found at Glenwood Caverns, a cave system that is suitable for families to view. There are guided walking tours through the illuminated passageways. For the more adventurous, an alternative tour is available that goes through the less accessible places where it's not possible to walk upright. There isn't any wheelchair access to the caves. A tram operates to take passengers to the top of the mountain, where there are rides for the children and a viewing platform.
Skiers have lots of opportunities to indulge in their sport when they visit Glenwood Springs Co. The town is only 40 miles from Aspen and 60 miles from the Vail ski resorts. The locals favor a resort much nearer to home. Sunlight Mountain is a mere 10 miles away from the town.
After a day on the slopes, it's tempting to have a soak in the hot mineral waters of the Yampa Hot Springs Spa. The healing qualities of the sulphur waters were known to the local Native American population, who gave it the name of Yampa, meaning big medicine. Since then, the underground steam baths have become a modern tourist attraction and the spa also offers massage treatments, herbal mud treatments and facials.
The townspeople are fortunate in having an excellent Community Center, equipped with a fitness gym, climbing wall, running track, indoor swimming pool and ice rink. Parents in Glenwood Springs Co can make use of a babysitting service whilst they participate in the various activities.
