Chemistry Set For My Daughter

By: Sandy Howard

When I was a little girl I always wanted a chemistry set. I never got one, so when I got to high school I was eager to take Chemistry as a class. I thought there was something amazing about taking two things, mixing them together, and having something new appear. Though I never got my chemistry set when I was a kid, looking back to my performance in Chemistry, I suspect that was for the best. I didn’t do well in Chemistry, though it wasn’t for a lack of trying. I’m not a stupid person, but I do have trouble paying attention. This meant that I did not do as well as I could have in science and math. I did very well in English and spelling, though you may not believe the spelling part if you were to read one of my emails. I had no interest in math, and that might explain why I didn’t do well, but I should have done better in Chemistry due to my interest. A chemistry set when I was a kid might have been a disaster because I don’t have enough patience. My daughter is only five, but she has recently asked me for a chemistry set. I think it is because we got one for my sister in law, and I think my little girl was very interested in what she was doing when she got it out to try it. It wasn’t an advanced chemistry set, but it was something that my daughter could do with some supervision. I’m just afraid I am not the one who should be helping her, and my husband has to work a lot of overtime. I might just have to get her the chemistry set anyway. I think it will be something that is good for her education, and getting her interested in science. Many girls fall behind in science and math just because they haven’t been properly introduced and some think of these as male dominated fields. I can’t say she’ll be any better at either one of them than I was, but there is no reason why she can’t try. If that means taking some time to help her with the chemistry set then that is what I am willing to do, even if I do blow up the house. I’ll just warn my husband ahead of time, and make sure my important papers are in the trunk of the car, just in case.
