The fact that we are involved in a war is not news to anyone in our country. The war has been a hotly debated issue since the first shot was fired and the first troops deployed. How long the troops will be away from home is unknown and what condition they will return home in remains to be seen. It is important that family members, friends and veterans educate themselves about the different programs that are available to them once they have returned home.
Many times there are federal programs that the average person has no way of knowing about. One area that is not widely talked about are veterans administration benefits. Many times the general public, including former military personnel think that the veterans administration benefits are only available for those that have been wounded in active combat. The veteran’s administration certainly does serve that population, but they also give a wide variety of services to people that have service related medical issues that may not surface for years.
Many of the service personnel are facing the effects of post traumatic stress disorder. This mental health disorder, called “soldier’s disease” after World War I and World War II, affects thousands of members of the military. Other areas that the administration services are hearing aids for service related hearing loss, treatment for diseases that are often common among soldiers from the various wars, such as hepatitis C, skin rashes, and other effects from chemicals that are used during warfare.
The easiest way to obtain veterans administration benefits is to go through your local veteran’s service officer. The veteran’s service officer is located in most local government facilities. This officer will help to complete the necessary paper work as well as help to gather the medical information that will be needed by the veteran’s administration office to determine benefits. The benefits can include health care and supplemental insurance benefits, mental health counseling, group counseling, long term care stays, rehabilitation services and also cash benefits for those that are determined to be disabled. There are also funds available for education and rehabilitative training. This federal program is available to all members of the military, past and present. It is worth while to check into the services that are available and to check on each soldier’s eligibility. The programs are funded by the federal government. Most states have veteran’s service facilities located in the larger cities, with branch offices located regionally. Most of the facilities specialize in certain populations such as the elderly, psychological needs, or physical health needs. The directory located in the Veteran’s Administration website gives the locations and services of all the facilities in the country.
