North Georgia Attractions For All

By: Jean Houston

The northern end of the state of Georgia is a mountainous region and was the home of the Cherokee people before settlers arrived from Europe. The scenery and history attract many visitors to North Georgia in what was the site for several USA Civil War encounters.

There are some unusual tourist centers in the region, including the town of Helen in the Appalachian Mountains. It is replicated from a typical alpine village in Bavaria, Germany. The most popular time to visit is in the fall when the leaves turn to a golden color. This is when the annual Oktoberfest takes place, a celebration of German culture based on such festivals in Bavaria. There are many other events in Helen in North Georgia, including the Hot Air Balloon Race that is held every year. The town has recovered well from damage sustained from a tornado in 2005, which was the result of Hurricane Katrina.

The highest summit in Georgia is to be found near the city of Blairsville in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Brasstown Bald has a park, picnic spot and a viewing area close to the top. Many events are organized here, the most popular being the annual Sorghum Festival to celebrate a successful harvest. There is a big parade, followed by other activities.

The town of Rome was named in tribute to the historic Rome of Italy, and this Rome in North Georgia was also built on the foundations of seven hills. The dictator, Benito Mussolini presented the town with a gift in 1929, in the shape of a replica of the famous statue depicting Romulus and Remus and the mother wolf from legend. It is also known for its many buildings of historical and architectural interest.

The area also caters for nature lovers and those wanting to participate in outdoor activities. Unicoi State Park is a center for hikers, mountain bikers and fishing enthusiasts. People also come here for canoeing, swimming or to hire pedal boats on the 53 acre lake. The Lakeland forest setting also has a beach, tennis courts, restaurants, conference center and picnic areas. Accommodation includes sites for tents and RV's, lodges and cottages. There are musical performances during the summer months.

One of the most magnificent falls in the area is the Minnehaha Falls, cascading from 60 foot high. They attract many tourists to this spot in North Georgia, especially in the month of May when the rhododendron that abundantly grows in the cove is in bloom. There are walking trails through the surrounding forest, making it a lovely day out with a picnic.
