It has surprised everyone that I have ended up in a non profit organization job. You see, I am not actually much of a team player, and I haven't really gotten along very well with political activists in the past. As a matter of fact, non profit organizations jobs were furthest from my list when I began looking for a career. Don't get me wrong – I have some very strong political convictions, and I'm not just an armchair activist. I really am willing to do my part and do what I can to support what I believe in. I have worked with non profit organizers before, and I have extensive experience in many different activist fields. Nonetheless, I always thought it would just stay a spare time activity. I did not realize it would go any further.
It actually started off one summer when I couldn't find a place to work. I happen to be looking through a non profit organization list, desperately seeking any openings for a canvassing position. I knew that there are always non profit organizations jobs available at the last minute if you are willing to work hard for a low wage. You never feel more like alienated labor then while working for non profit organizations jobs. It is pretty ironic because many of these non profit start up organizations are actually working to change labor laws so that people can make more money. Nonetheless, when you work for one of these groups, you have to be willing to work for almost nothing. Almost nothing is as much as you are likely to make.
I didn't expect there to be much opportunity for advancement in the non profit organizations job I first got. I was working as a canvasser, after all, so half of my coworkers weren't even out of high school. Nonetheless, some nonprofit organizations are more practical about hiring practices than others. Although there are many entry-level non profit organizations jobs that never go any further, some of the smaller non profit start ups actually promote in-house. That means that everyone starts off in the same position and has the same opportunities for advancement. If you can find these , consider yourself lucky. You really have a chance to go far based on your work. In my case, it turns out that I loved that particular organization, and even grew to respect the people working there. Nowadays, I make a living wage and do some extremely important work.
