What is scary to me is that there are more and more missing persons stories on the news. Every day it seems as if there is someone, either an adult or child, that has been taken from their home, or has not been seen for a few days. Sadly, most missing persons cases end in tragedy. Though there are many great stories about people who have been brought home safely, there are far too many that result in serious injury or death.
I had a discussion with my friends about this very subject. We wondered if there were more missing persons stories in the news because more people were being kidnapped and hurt, or if it was just because the news was zeroing in on this type of story. With each day that goes by, the world becomes a smaller place. We could not decide if the missing persons cases were on the rise because there were more weirdoes in the world, or if it was just because there is more of an opportunity for the stories to be made public to the rest of the world.
Whatever the case may be, each missing persons case is just as important as the next. Though missing children seem to be the biggest tragedy, that does not mean that the teenagers and adults that are missing are not just as important. What is scary about a child being a part of a missing persons case is that they are the least able to care for themselves. This means that even if the opportunity to escape where to come about they may not even realize it, or know what to do about. Also, we all know that the thought of a small helpless child in the hands of someone who wants to do them harm is probably one of the saddest things we can think of.
Throughout history there has always been missing persons cases. Even though it may seem like there are more and more of them today, you have to realize that more and more of them are being resolved. Just 50 years ago if someone you knew were considered a missing person, chances are good that you would never see them again. The news reaches further than ever before, and that also means that technology is better than it has ever been. When there is a missing persons case, it is far easier to get a description of both the suspected kidnapper in the person who is missing out to the general public.
