I have always loved Lake Ontario fishing. Lake Ontario has everything I love about the ocean without the things that I dislike. It is huge, cold, and clear. It can have violent storms, yet it can also be unusually placid. It is a bit calmer than the ocean, however, and has fresh water. This means that it is nicer to swim in. the best thing about it, however, is like Ontario fishing.
My father was a big fan of Lake Ontario salmon fishing. His father, in fact, had been a Lake Ontario salmon fisherman. Lake Ontario fishing was a sort of tradition in his family. Although they no longer were professionals, him and his father would take me out fishing as soon as I reached the age of five. At first, I found Lake Ontario fishing to be a little bit scary. The waves could be huge, the water was so deep I could not see the bottom, and the wind could come up suddenly. I felt a little bit disoriented to be off of dry land. Soon, however, Lake Ontario fishing turned out to be a great joy for me.
We were actually trout fishing Lake Ontario the day that I finally found my love of the water. Usually, my father and grandfather frowned on trout, but my mother had gotten a taste for it and we all went out to see if we could catch any. Lake Ontario fishing has been a bit bad that summer. The weather had been flaky, and there had been algae blooms reported in the lake. As a result, fish were few and far between. We could not find any of the big schools. Suddenly, however, I felt something tug at my fishing line. It was much bigger than anything else I had felt so far. On previous lake Ontario fishing trips, in fact, I got to do very little fishing. They thought I was too young to handle a fishing line on my own, and that summer had been the first time I was allowed to carry a rod and a reel.
When my grandfather saw that I had a bite from a Lake Ontario fish, he did not smile at me. At once, his expression grew very serious. He gave me a quick lesson in the part of Lake Ontario fishing, telling me when to pull, when to let the reel out, when to yank on it, and when to relent. It was hard going, but I caught one of the biggest trout that we had all summer. After that, I loved to fish. You couldn't keep me away from it, in fact.
