Wood Bread Box VS. Tin Bread Box

By: Cameron Stewart

It seems that not many people I know want to own a wood bread box. Even I don’t have one, but that is only because I don’t have the room for one in my tiny kitchen. My mom always had one while we were growing up, and I don’t know if there was any benefit other than keeping the bread out of sight, but quite frankly, anything you can use to keep my tiny kitchen tidy would be greatly welcome. Sadly, in order to fit a bread box in my kitchen I would have to give up my microwave or my coffee maker, and that is just not going to happen.

The wood bread box my mom had was very old, but looked really great in her kitchen. She got it from my great-grandmother and remembered using it when she was a child. Needless to say it was not too fancy, but it certainly was made like nothing you can get in the stores now. Once it started to fall apart from being used roughly by four generations, my mom decided that she wanted to get a new wood bread box and put the old one away.

She now has a tin bread box, and I don’t like it very much. I think she has quit using it, and that is because of the way it works. It is nothing more than a box with a lid that is very hard to get off. It makes it very hard to get the bread out when you need it. The best thing about the wood bread box was that you could just slide the side up and the bread was right there. No one likes to mess around moving and rearranging things just to get to their bread.

You can find a great wood bread box in the stores, or if you know someone who is handy with wood, you can have one made. They are a great look in almost any kitchen, but some won’t think they go with anything. You can usually find the same styles in metal if you like, or you can find them painted to match your kitchen décor. Though I think a wood bread box is a great addition to any kitchen, the wood is optional. The whole point is to keep your bread out of site and to keep the kitchen looking neat. Nothing is more relaxing than a clean and well put-together room.
