I always tell all of my girls, it is best to be prepared. You see, as a womens self defense instructor, my job does not consist solely of teaching martial arts. Anyone can learn martial arts in any number of classes, but women's self-defense classes are different. The point of them is not just to learn to fight, but to learn how to avoid trouble.
Many experts say that almost 90% of attacks can be stopped by simply facing your attacker and shouting in a clear voice, “no”. The point of womens self defense classes is to show my students how not to be victims. In any given women self defense class, we will practice some basic moves and show how they can be applied, do some partner practice, and then give a lesson about safety. That way, the womens self defense students learn not just about how to fight, but how to avoid the need to fight in the first place. It is always much safer, after all, to avoid a physical confrontation if possible.
The reason it is so much safer is that no class in womens self defense can totally prepare you for the actual experience of having to deal with a violent attacker. You just do not know if you'll be able to keep your cool in that situation. Many people, even trained martial artists, lose their cool the first time they have to fight in the real world. One of my goals as a teacher of womens self defense is to help my students avoid the need to fight in the real world. If they do have to fight, I would obviously like them to beat their attacker. But my number one goal is to keep them safe, and the best way to do that is to keep them from a fight.
If you have never taken womens self defense classes before, I would highly suggest that you try them. Not only are women self defense courses a valuable tool for ensuring your safety, but they are also a fun workout. On top of that, there is no better way to make friends. You'll meet women from all walks of life, all drawn together for the course. In fact, after our womens self defense class, we often go out for drinks together. Of course, no one has to, but it can be a lot of fun to interact with your classmates outside of the class.
