Tables And Chairs To Change Your Home's Atmosphere

By: Sam Dillon

You wouldn't believe how much difference having the right furniture can make in a house. For years, I have lived with old hand-me-down furniture. It was not anything I planned to do, it's just that it often takes me a long time to get around to things like that. You see, furniture has always been a low priority for me. I have an active social life, an incredibly difficult work schedule, and several recreational activities besides. I just don't get around to getting furniture that often, and that is that.

Still, now that I have some wooden tables and chairs that I like, everything is much nicer. My living room and dining room look beautiful all of the sudden. Now don't get me wrong, it's not like I didn't have a nice table and chairs before. They were made of good wood, were in fairly good condition for antiques, and definitely serve my purposes. The problem was that they were a bit old, a bit overly elaborate. I like a modern look to my chairs and tables, and even though many people value antiques, I am not one of them. I would much rather have tables and chairs with an elegant, simple design.

What amazes me most is how having different tables and chairs changes that apparent dimensions of the room. Before, with a bulky antique wooden table, the space looked tiny and cramped. The table was almost monolithic – it took up all the available room and seemed to suck the air out of the dining room. Now that I have tables and chairs that I like in there, Slim sleek things with a lower profile, the room looks much larger. It is amazing the difference that it makes. You'd hardly think that it was the same room!

The real problem with buying new tables and chairs is that they change the space so much that they make you want to redecorate. Before I had the new table and chair, I had the walls covered with lush, bright paintings. I needed contrast since the tables and chairs dominated the room with their bulky, stiff presence. I needed something that looked bright, playful, joyous, and insubstantial. The tables and chairs, after all, looked so heavy and sullen that they needed something to contrast with them to lighten the mood of the room. Now that I don't have the same tables and chairs, however, I can put up more serious and somber works of art.
