I find it funny to think about how popular striped tube socks are nowadays. My kids wear them all the time, and I know that my children are very fashionable. It didn't used to be that way. Back in my day, there was nothing dorkier than knee high socks. Don't get me wrong, most of us wore them – you had to. You see, almost everyone played sports in school, and gym socks were a required part of the uniform. Nonetheless, we would take any excuse that we could to get out of wearing a knee high tube socks. Striped tube socks, in particular, were viewed as an egregious violation of fashion. Those broad horizontal stripes made your legs look like candy canes or barbershop polls. No one wanted that!
Nowadays, however, things have gone halfway around the circle. What was cool then is no longer cool, and what was uncool then is all the rage now. Striped tube socks are not the only thing to come in. Those ugly, blunt-toed shoes that I used to hate are now the fashionable thing to wear. Back in my day, we used to call those witch shoes. No one liked them any more than they liked wearing striped tube socks. My mother made me wear shoes like that, because they were straightforward and sensible, and were better for your feet. I never would have gone out and bought a pair on my own! It was unthinkable to do.
Every time I see my kids in those striped tube socks, I can't help but laugh. There is nothing like laughing at a teenager to antagonize him or her. I try to get them to wear sensible gold toe socks because they look so ridiculous in those striped socks, but they will not listen to me.
Honestly, my attitude is a lot different than my mother's attitude was. Back in the old days, if she did not want me to wear striped tube socks, I would not have gotten to wear them. She was very strict, and she felt like my fashion sense reflected on her. Times have changed a lot since then. Nowadays, we let our kids wear basically what they want. As long as they are not getting involved with the wrong crowd, I don't really care that much. Whether it is striped tube socks or ripped pants with safety pins in them, it is all the same to me.
