Speaker Boxes Do More Than Just Hold Speakers

By: Terry Olmort

Most people have speakers in their homes, but they don’t really understand how they work. They think the speaker boxes are just housing for the speakers, and they abuse them without thinking about what they are doing. You should know that the boxes are a part of the speaker, and if anything were to happen to them, you might experience an altered sound. They will not sound as good as they use to, and you will have to go out and buy new ones.

The speaker boxes are essential for the integrity of the sound. If you were to drill holes in them, you may find that your sound is suddenly different. You have to use care if you hang them on the wall, or if you move them, you want to handle them very carefully. One drop could do more damage than you can imagine. If you have high priced speakers, they are going to be even more touchy. You should also remember that temperature changes can affect the wood. If you have your speaker boxes set where the temps vary from season to season, or if you leave them sitting in the sun, the wood will warp or dry out, and they may not work very well.

One of the first things you might look at if your speakers sound funny are the speakers themselves. This is normal, and that may very well be the problem. They are very delicate, and if they are ripped or torn, they are not going to work properly. You can find a detailed description of how a speaker works on the Internet if you do a search on the subject. You don’t want to replace one on your own unless you know what you are doing. You should consider it might be the speaker boxes that are to fault rather than the speakers.

If you are good with woodworking, you can make your own speaker boxes, but I should stress that you have to get them just right for them to sound really good. You can find instructions to build them, but it might take a lot of practice before you get them right. The size of the speaker boxes that you want to make will depend on what you will be using them for, and what size speaker you want to put inside. The more research you do on the subject before you begin, the better your end results will be.
