Sewing Machines Make For A Soothing Hobby Idea

By: Baily Richards

I have loved sewing machines since before I knew what they were. When I was a kid, I saw my mom working on the sewing machine at all hours of the day. You see, just sitting down at the sew machine always seemed to relax her. Whether she had just bought sewing machine accessories that she wanted to try out, or was just working on an old pattern, she could be seen at any hour of the day or night sitting down and working on her hobby.

The sewing machines hum was always soothing to me because it reminded me of my mother. When I found out all the amazing things that you could do with machine sewing, it only made it better! Honestly, I had watched my mom sit down at that sewing machine for years before I figured out what it did. I was so used to it that I never even thought about it. I knew that she made clothing, of course, but I didn't really realize that had anything to do with sewing machines. I saw her sit down on front of the sewing machine with cloth and stand up with a finished dress in her hand. I had seen her sew by hand, of course, but the complicated piece of machinery was beyond my comprehension.

Once my mom showed me what sewing machines were for, of course, I dived into hers headfirst. She had an old Singer sewing machine – practically an antique – but it worked excellently. I have seen some of the fancy new sewing machines that can do a million different kinds of stitches, but I don't think that you need them. Give me an old, well-made, rugged sewing machine and a day. I will even work with a foot pedal if I have to!

If you have seen all of the things that my mom did with old sewing machines, you would feel the same way. She was really amazing! She didn't have a fancy sewing and embroidery machine, But she could do anything that she wanted to with just the basic tools. I understand that good, high-quality sewing machines can help you do things that you can't do otherwise, but I think that starting with too fancy a rig can really stop you from learning the fundamentals. Basic sewing machines can do almost anything. You shouldn't learn shortcuts until you know the good, old-fashioned way of doing things.
