Sewing Machine Accessories Make Sewing Easier

By: Dylan Wilson

Although many of us remember our mother’s making homemade clothing for us, it’s really not a hobby that has captured the attention of many today. There are several reasons for this including a lack of time and patience, but making something to wear or perhaps a tote bag yourself can be a wonderfully rewarding experience. Having a machine at home for handling mending and small repairs can also save a family a nice amount of money. If you are a sewer or are interested in becoming one there are many sewing machine accessories you might want to purchase.

Years ago it was fairly common to have a machine for sewing that was built into a small table. These would come complete with a chair and the machine itself would fold down into the table when not in use. Some people consider these antiques now because the majority of machines bought today are portable. If you did happen to inherit one of the older models there are some sewing machine accessories you can buy for it. One is a thread stand which allows the sewer the ability to use metallic threads on an older machine. This is great when creating costumes for Halloween or a school play.

Most of the newer models have a cover that doubles as a carrying case. The very small portable designs don’t normally come equipped with many sewing machine accessories. So purchasing a cover is going to be a necessity. The cover really does help to keep dust away from the machine.

Bobbins, spool holders and extra needles are all small items that can be purchased after you’ve bought the machine. Most models will come with some sewing machine accessories included, but if you need a heavy gauge needle for repairing jeans, you will likely need to buy this separately. Also most machines come with just a few bobbins if you are an avid sewer you already know that this is one of the sewing machine accessories that you need quite a lot of.

Many of us who do sew from time-to-time find that we stick with one or two colors of thread. Thread is actually one of the least expensive sewing machine accessories and if you take the time to find the exact shade you need, you are going to have a much better looking final garment. Most sewing stores have loads of thread in every shade imaginable for just a few cents per spool. It’s a great idea to invest in several different colors and then keep adding to the collection.

You don’t have to tackle a floor length gown or a pair of trousers when you first start using your sewing machine. Moms with small children can use their machine to make tote bags for the child to carry toys in or books. Many older kids love the idea of having colorful patches on their jeans. With all the sewing machine accessories available any job whether it’s large or small is a breeze.
