I was always one who loved the idea of having a great collection of books. The very idea of owning a private library was a dream of mine in years past. Ironically, I now sell used books whenever I get a chance. Not only is this a great way to keep your collection of texts under control it is also a great way to make some extra cash.
Some of you must think that I am a literary traitor but this is not the case. I still keep an excellent collection of books that is quite sizeable. In fact, my niece looked over the stash and asked if I actually read each and every book. When I told her that I did and that I also sell used books that I have already read she said that she didn’t think I was that old. I guess that’s a compliment.
There are some decisions that need to be made if you are considering the option to sell used books. The first is which venue is best for your particular needs. While I prefer to deal with online stores many people prefer to sell used books locally. There are benefits and drawbacks to each approach.
I used to sell used books locally. I tried local newspaper advertisements and I even ventured out early on Saturday mornings to set up a table at flea markets. There was little money coming in from these avenues so I decided to sell used books through a resale shop that specializes in books, the Book Tree.
I didn’t have to worry about shipping and I also sell used books to the store instead of waiting for consignment. While the Book Tree did move many of my books I didn’t make nearly as much as I do when I sell books directly.
We all know that books are pretty heavy especially when it comes to shipping them out. I do cringe at the amount of money I have spent (as well as charged) for shipping when I sell used books. However, I find that the customer is getting a great deal on a book that would have cost much more than he spent buying it used and having it shipped.
Over all, I do like the convenience of selling books locally because it is really simple but I actually prefer to sell used books online. If you are interested in doing the same, try sites like Swapbooks.com and Half.com. You can be on your way to making room for new reads in a matter of minutes.
