I don’t think I have ever seen anything like New Jersey traffic. I have been to New York City, and I have been up around Connecticut, but there is just nothing like what you will find in the Garden State. I have a friend who lives there, and she drives much like everyone else from that state, but I do have to admit that she is a very good driver. On a recent road trip this summer, I was thankful that she had experience when I did not, and she saved me from freaking out.
We were driving from Philadelphia to Rhode Island, and I had no idea that the directions I had took us through New Jersey traffic, and right near NYC. For some reason I thought we were going up through Pennsylvania, but that was not the case. When I told her that I wanted her to drive until the traffic calmed down, she gave me a funny look and got into the car. Within a very short time we were smack in the middle of heavy New Jersey traffic, and I realized why she was looking at me funny. We were not going through PA, we were going through some of the most heavily traveled roads on this side of the country.
She knew that I was not thrilled about driving anywhere where there might be heavy traffic, and she knew that when we hit New Jersey traffic I would probably have freaked out. I am always amazed at how they drive out there, but I do have to admit they do get where they are going. I can’t say I’m fond of a car whipping onto the highway via the on-ramp only to slide out into the outer fast lane in a matter of seconds, but as long as no one is hurt, and I am not driving, I guess I can’t say much about it.
My friends New Jersey traffic experience saved me a lot of headache. I would drive in lighter traffic and she took over when we got to the city or when we were near heavily traveled interstate. It worked out well for us, and we both logged about the same amount of miles behind the wheel. We had a great time, and I think that was because we both drove where we were comfortable. I might tease her about some of her driving habits, but I am very thankful that she has them.
