Robotic Heart Surgery Options Examined

By: Jessie Geralds

Robotic technology has come a long way since I was a kid. Back when I was young, robot toys were the rule. Although people were beginning to use robots in manufacture, it was an industry in its infancy. Some people actually doubted if robotic manufacture would ever take off. There certainly was nothing like robotic heart surgery around in those days. No one would think that there could be anything more delicate and precise than the surgeons hands!

Things have really changed a lot since then. Nowadays, robotic heart surgery is almost routine. You see, minimally invasive heart surgery is really the ideal. Surgery is usually a very traumatic thing for the body. You are sedated with powerful chemicals, you are cut open, and parts of you are removed. Even in the most sterile environment, minor infections are almost unavoidable. Sometimes complications arise, and the patient can even die from the most routine surgeries. Anything that makes the surgery more precise and less hard on the body is always a welcome development.

That is just where robotic cardiac surgery comes into play. Heart surgery is usually one of the most difficult operations that there is. When you are doing surgery on other parts the body, you do not usually have to deal with a lot of movement. With heart surgery, however, the blood is pumping the whole time. This is why robotic heart surgery is so great. When robotic heart surgery can be used, there is much less danger of mistakes or death. A smaller hole can be used, the cuts are more precise, and the recovery time is much quicker. If something goes wrong, a surgeon can always improvise and go in by hand. Nonetheless, robot heart surgery has very few failures when compared to more conventional kind.

One of the problems with robotic heart surgeries is that it was very difficult to deal with unexpected events in the past. As time goes by and the technology gets better, this is less and less of a problem. The day is not far away when robotic heart surgery will be the only kind there is, and old-fashioned surgery will be a thing of the past. Surgeons will still be used in robotic heart surgery, of course, but their role be mostly to direct the robot. They can also step in and control the robot's motions, but those motions will be much smaller and more precise.
