Police Officers - The Right Career For You?

By: Sky Hudgins

If there's one thing our great nation could always use more of, it's police officers. But you don't have to take my word for it; it's clear by the increase of salary they've had over the past years. I can still recall back in the 90s when my father would complain about how bad a law enforcement officer's salary was. He would always compare it to a doctor's wages. He stated that they saved lives too; so why such a small compensation for doing so? Hmm, not a bad point. And law enforcement officers actually put themselves in harm's way to help others. Well, that era is gone and now police officers are starting with more desirable wages. So if it's your dream to become a law enforcement officer, now's the time to get started.

In my lifetime I've known several police officers, game wardens and state troopers. All of which had to go through standard training procedures to earn their badge. There's no denying that becoming a police officer or any peace officer, involves certain risks. This is something to ponder before reaching for the badge. I think the best place to begin is online. Find out what new police officers are offered in your particular area. See if the pay is up-to-par as far as you're concerned. Find out if law enforcement officers are in-demand in your state or city. And finally, you'll want to see what education is required for becoming a police officer. Different states have different requirements.

The good news is that crime rates are dropping in recent years due to an increase in law enforcement. A number of anxious individuals are acquiring their associate of applied Science in Criminal Justice degrees in order to get started. This is a great way to learn your way around law. And the wonderful news is that you can do it online. This is basically a two-year degree that can be acquired from a variety of schools. Check your local area now and see if it's offered at a community college or University near you. It's never too late to get started with a career that's right for you.
