Competition is a huge part of any athlete's life. Being on top is the greatest glory of the winner's experience, attained only through rigorous, consistent and grueling work. However, this sense of pride and glory isn't limited to world class athletes.
Those of us ordinary people, just trying to lose weight or get fit have a similar sense of pride and glory when we accomplish our goals. Many of us find it difficult to travel this road alone. Often, it's a simple lack of self motivation that gets the best of us. Many times, you may clearly see that you could have done better, but lacked the discipline necessary to the goal. This is where a personal trainer steps in. The personal trainer is there to motivate, instill discipline and make sure you make it happen. A personal trainer shows you the ropes to assure your success.
The job of a personal trainer is to motivate. You may not think that he's friendly or personable, but that's beside the point. He isn't there to make you feel good. As a matter of fact, many personal trainers in athletics are hired purely to shame the athlete into a better performance. Much like a military drill sergeant, he screams and spits, but only for your own good. While he's barking that you can't possibly do any better, you become motivated and set out to prove him wrong. “What do you mean I can't do that! I'll show you!” Just the response the personal trainer wants.
A personal trainer isn't all bark and bite though. He also has years, if not decades of athletic experience. He is there to train you out of bad habits. For years, you may have been boxing a certain way, one that is unacceptable in the ring today. A personal trainer will point these flaws out, and show you how to do better. He may also provide strategies customized to your opponent's strengths or your weaknesses.
A personal trainer for the weight loss crowd is likely to use a different approach to help you attain your goals. Because most people don't take kindly to a large muscular man screaming orders and insults in their faces, this kind of trainer is likely to be gentler. Rather that telling you to do something, he will ask you to do it. Instead of saying you don't stand a chance, his constant rejoinder is that “you can do it”. He is more of a counselor than instructor.
Whether you're training for the Tour de France or just trying to get fit, a personal trainer can be invaluable in attaining your goal. Their job is to keep you motivated, consistent and disciplined in the pursuit of your goal. In the instance of the ordinary person in a weight loss program, statistics show that those with a personal trainer are likely to lose twice as much. You can't beat results like that with a stick!
