Oscar De La Renta Fashion Design, Clothing, And Accessories

By: Baily Richards

A long and successful career in haute couture brings its own rewards and Oscar de la Renta is one of the most respected fashion designers around. He was born in 1932 in the Dominican Republic and re-located to Spain when he was a teenager. His original ambition was to be a painter and he studied in Madrid to achieve that. His interest turned to fashion and he was hired by the leading fashion houses in Spain to sketch designs. This brought him to the attention of the most successful designer in the country, Cristobal Balenciaga, who took him on as an apprentice.

It was time then to move on and he settled in Paris to work as an assistant at the Lanvin house. His career developed further in 1963 when he accepted a position as a designer with the world famous Elizabeth Arden Company. He gained valuable experience there and started his own label. The Oscar de la Renta label carries a wide variety of products, including shoes, sleepwear, furs, jewelry and fragrances. There is also a large choice of accessories with scarves, bags and belts.

The company also designs for men with items like trousers, suits and casual jackets. There is also a line of sportswear that caters for both men and boys that operates in Latin America. The company expanded into production of furniture, home fragrance, tablecloths, rugs, bedding and interior décor items such as wallpaper. Oscar de la Renta was the first American to design for a French house when he was commissioned by Pierre Balmain to produce a high fashion collection. He had gained American citizenship in 1971.

The designer has won numerous awards and accolades from the industry, including a Lifetime Achievement Award by the CFDA in 1990. Oscar de la Renta is known for putting something back into the community and never forgetting where he came from. He is on the board of directors for several charitable bodies and he helped to fundraise to build a school near his hometown in the Dominican Republic. In 1981, he gave his time for free in being the head designer of new uniforms for the Boy Scouts of America.

After such a long time at the top, his designs still look fresh and exciting. He shows no sign of slowing down, despite advancing years. Fashion trends may come and go but the longevity of the Oscar de la Renta collection is based on an elegant style that never falls out of favor. His fabrics too reflect a classic outlook with velvet, cashmere, satin and lace.
