Old Glass Bottles For Interior Decorating |

So many decorating ideas seem to get recycled. When I was growing up my mother had our bathroom decorated with old glass bottles filled with water that was colored with food coloring. The bottles sat at the edge of the tub and also on corner shelves by the window. I remember thinking it was neat the way the sunshine faded the colors in the bottles by the windows. I also liked watching how mom created different colors by combining two or more of the dyes. Two of the old glass bottles had glass stoppers on them that could also be filled with liquid.
When I was in high school my mom found a different decoration for the bathroom and the old glass bottles were emptied and moved down to the basement. A few years ago my mom needed to sell the family home and move into a senior apartment. As we were packing up the basement we came across the old glass bottles. One of my nieces asked if she could have them so that she could fill them with colored water and place them on a shelf in her bathroom. I told her about her grandmother having the bottles displayed in the same manner in her bathroom. My niece was surprised that this was an old idea because she had gotten the idea from watching a decorating show on television. We all agreed that she could have the old glass bottles.
My niece recently had a baby so I went to her house to drop off a gift for the baby. While I was there I went to the bathroom and saw where she had displayed the bottles filled with the colored water. They looked very nice. She has a glass shelf that extends the length of her window. She has three bottles filled with the water and also several glass paperweights on the shelf. The glass reflects the sunlight during the day and the light from the vanity mirrors in the evening. It is a very nice looking arrangement. Using the glass shelving enhances the amount of light that the glass objects reflect.
Once I saw the old glass bottles displayed I was wishing that I had taken them from my mother’s house. You can purchase new bottles because the look is very popular again, but it would have been special to have the bottles that I grew up with. I do not have the heart to ask my niece to give them up. It is nice that they are bringing her joy.
