The crime rate in America can be a lot to fathom at times. I certainly think it's a bit much to take in and swallow. Sometimes I even wonder who truly ends up getting punished. Is it the criminal or the victim? Unfortunately victims of crime often go through terrible ordeals as it is. The last thing they need is to be further scrutinized and punished. Especially when the evidence is clear as day. It just seems that the victims rights are too often forgotten. We need to start enforcing stronger laws against those who corrupt our country. If we fail to do so, the high crime rate will only increase and the victim count as well.
One of the worst crimes that's often gotten away with is rape. And I'm not referring to the sexual assault that goes on in prisons. Even though it does make up a large percentage of the rape statistics in this country. I am merely talking about date or acquaintance rape. It's typically a crime against females and it's been around forever. A male acquaintance, whether a friend, relative, date, or boyfriend is commonly the attacker. It's so sad when we can't tell who to trust and who to be wary of. I personally knew a girl when I was 19 years old, who was raped by her boyfriend. She was 20 at the time and in college. She had dated the guy for nearly two years and they were never sexually intimate. Apparently he got fed up with the waiting and decided to lock her in his dorm and assault her. She told no one. This brings up the notion of victims rights. She had the right to speak out, but didn't due to shame. She felt that there was no way she could win this battle due to their long relationship, and just kept quiet instead. I don't judge her, but this just goes to show that the victims rights were never brought out into the open. She never pursued a law suit or attack on her assailant. Many girls do this exact same thing. Maybe for reasons of shame and maybe for lack of confidence in winning the case. The only problem here is that victims rights are then stifled and no punishment is passed out.
Bring on the pain for criminals. Every offender needs to feel the wrath of their crimes. Victims rights are important and should be acknowledged. Keeping silent will never get anyone anywhere. The crimes will only continue and worsen.
