Tool Kits As Gifts

By: Jamie Preston

There is one thing that bothers me about my relatives. They always buy my husband tool kits for Christmas. This may not seem like a bad thing, but I can assure you that in this household it is. My husband works in construction, so they are under the impression that he can use all of the tools that he can get. There is some truth to that thought, but the tool kits that he is getting for gifts are not useful in the least. You have probably seen these in the stores near the holidays, and if you have, you may know what I am talking about.

Most of the tool kits that he has received as gifts are in a pile in our closet. They are not the least bit useful and they all have the same stuff in there. I don’t know why, but I think his dad gets him the same exact one each year. I swear I could open a tool store with the ones he has in the closet. Most of these tool kits are not useful for what he does, and they are geared towards someone who does not use tools for a living. However, if we have a flat tired or we have a bolt loose in the house, we are covered a hundred times over.

These tool kits were neat the first year he got them. I found it nice to have them around the house when he was away. I could use them fix some minor things on my own. He was just starting in construction, and some of the stuff was useful. He now has to buy his own tools, and he never needs any of the simple tools that are continued within these particular tool kits. I know they mean well, but this has got to stop.

If you want to buy tool kits for a gift, consider the person you are buying for. If they have a job in construction or carpentry, you might want to ask them if there is anything that they need. They may not need anything that you can find in these simple tool kits. If you are buying for someone to give them something to keep around the house, find out if they already have something. They may seem like a quick and easy gift, but they aren’t going to be very useful if they are piling up in the back of a closet somewhere.
