Teens Having Sex - Issues And Solutions

By: Alex Richardson

Though you may not think it is something that you have to worry about, if you have kids, it is your problem. You may think your child is above having sex at a young age, but even the smartest and most well adjusted kids can get caught up in doing what is considered ‘cool’ when they are with their friends. Teens having sex was common when I went to school, and I have seen that the problem is not only larger today, it has morphed into something else as well.

There may not be as many teens having sex in the way you might think, they are having it in different ways. Many teens are having oral sex thinking that they are having safe sex. They know they can’t get pregnant this way, but they don’t realize that they are still at risk for sexually transmitted diseases. The teens having sex are too young to realize that just because someone may say they are clean, or that this is their ‘first time’ that doesn’t mean they are telling the truth. Teens can be far too trusting of their peers.

When I was in high school teens having sex was something that was everywhere. It was a problem in every social clique, and there were girls who were turning up pregnant at least once every three months. We went to a rather small school so this was a huge problem. Some of them were so ashamed they hide their pregnancy for as long as they could and then they ‘went away’ to have the baby. They thought they were hiding, but everyone knew what was going on. Teens having sex was not a huge stigma then, but teens having babies was something no one wanted to talk about or acknowledge.

If you are worried about teens having sex, you should make sure you talk to them about it. If you think that not saying anything about sex will keep them in the dark and they won’t be tempted to do it, you are going to be in for a shock. Teens having sex is becoming more and more common, and not talking about it actually ups the chances of them doing it. If you don’t tell them that it is something they should do, and they don’t think you even suspect, they are going to do it anyway. Talking might not stop it, but you may put something in their mind that they thing about before they decide to do it.
