I consider myself lucky because I have never broken a bone in my life. I hope I’m not jinxing myself by saying that, but I’ve said it before with no incident. I have had my share of problems though, and one was a sprained ankle that stayed with me for a few weeks. Though that is preferable to a break, it was somewhat of a huge problem for me when it happened. I had gone to a concert with a few friends at an outdoor venue, and stepped in a hole as I was walking. The result was a pretty nasty sprain and a whole lot of pain.
Though many can get through a sprained ankle with minor irritation, I had a huge problem. I lived in the suburbs but rode a bus in to work each day. I should say two buses, because I had to get off and board a different one half way there. This made it very hard to get around. I could not put any weight on my sprained ankle so it took me forever to get on and off the buses. I found that people seem to have no patience either. They seemed to have very little sympathy for my pain.
It was better at work because I answered the phones. I did have other duties though, and those included quite a few trips around the rather large office I worked in. My boss was sympathetic about my sprained ankle, but I wasn’t one to shirk my responsibilities. I hobbled around the best I could and did my job. I wasn’t really looking for glory or praise; I just didn’t want to be confined to my desk because of a sprained ankle. I allowed some help, but I don’t like feeling like I am earning money when I’m not doing my job.
I think the fact that I am so stubborn slowed the healing time of my sprained ankle. In retrospect I realize I should not have been so stubborn and I should have accepted the light duties so I could heal faster. At the time, however, I just wasn’t thinking clearly. Perhaps it was the painkillers I was on, but I’m not sure. I suppose the next time I get a sprained ankle I will take it easy. Then again, some people just never learn. I know I’m a klutz, so I am thinking it may happen again, but I don’t work in an office any longer. It’ll be much easier to take it easy.
