Hormones shift dramatically in a woman’s body when she is expecting a child. Even after the baby is born, it takes some time for the body’s systems to get back to normal. Some women struggle more than others after they give birth and they experience unusually high levels of stress. This type of postpartum anxiety is often attributed to the change in the woman’s life including lack of sleep and having to care for a newborn constantly. There are treatments for these types of conditions and they can greatly improve how a woman feels.

Speaking with your doctor is something you should do if you feel depressed or out of sorts after the baby’s arrival. It’s important to explain to your physician exactly what you’ve been feeling. He or she will determine whether or not you have postpartum anxiety and if you do, they’ll be able to suggest a treatment plan that will get you feeling well again.

It certainly isn’t any type of failure on the part of a woman if she experiences this condition. Having a baby is a life changing experience and it can be difficult to adjust to the overwhelming demands that are involved in caring for an infant full-time. This is particularly true if a woman has never had a chance to be around a newborn much in the past.

Many women mistakenly believe that the feelings will naturally pass on their own. The problem when a woman does suffer from postpartum anxiety is that if left untreated it can greatly influence how she interacts with her infant. This is especially important during the first few weeks after the birth when bonding occurs. For a woman feeling unusually high levels of stress related to becoming a mom this can change the dynamic of the relationship forever.

This is a condition that can be hereditary so if you have the opportunity, ask your mother whether she experienced this or perhaps your grandmother did. Not only will this help your doctor diagnose whether or not you have postpartum anxiety but it will also give you the opportunity to speak to someone who has gone through the experience.

There’s nothing wrong with seeking help if this problem affects you. The time right after the birth of a new baby is emotional for both parents. For a mother who feels extra anxiety, asking for help is never a bad thing. Talk to your doctor about postpartum anxiety and listen to his or her suggestions. If medication is prescribed, take it. There’s absolutely no shame in taking care of yourself first so you can be a great mom.
