Plus Size Models Exposed

By: Evan Tyler

The world of fashion modeling can really send a shock to your system. If you've never tried your hand at modeling, I suggest you only do so if it's something you truly wish to pursue as a career. I've watched many girls have their confidence crushed by agents. But hey, this is all part of the game. When my 18-year-old step-daughter approached me with a modeling aspiration, I sat her down to ask a series of questions. My first one was, "Is this something you really want to do for a living?" Her answer was, "No, I just want to know that I can do it." Hmm, well that's not good enough. There are plenty of things I would like to know I can do, one of them becoming an astronaut, but you won't see me struggling to head into space. My point is that you should strive to be a model only if that's the career you want. It's not a hobby! It's a full-time devotion. Furthermore, I told her that she wouldn't fit into either category of plus size models or the high fashion girls. A size 8 is in between.

What is your take on modeling? Do you despise the business or loath the models? You really shouldn't. All those skinny girls are only doing what they need to in order to meet the designers' demands. They're the ones that want them SO thin. And then there are the plus size models. These women represent more of what America truly looks like. I'm talking size 12 and up. That's probably over half of our nation's population. But still, you don't see these women like you see the high fashion slim models. A perfect example is the television series, "America's Next Top Model." There were two plus size models this season, but one was already sent home. Most likely the other one will be sent home as well. As one of the competitors said, "When have you ever seen a plus size model on the cover of Vogue?" As sad as this sounds, the girl does have a valid point.

Okay, so we've established that the business for plus size models is not as grand as that for high fashion girls. No big surprise there. However, if you do want to pursue a career in modeling and have the chops to do plus size modeling, then I suggest you send queries to the leading agencies on the web. Attach a few snap shots as they direct you to. This is the fastest way to get your foot in the door.
