If you live in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, you’re more than familiar with Bube’s Brewery. And you probably know that inside of the brewery, there are a few different restaurants to choose from. In the Alois restaurant section, you can often find a mystery dinner theater taking place. Sometimes it is only every few months, but it is a wonderful experience. If you’ve never experienced a mystery dinner theater, put that on your “to do” list for the upcoming New Year. Not only can you be guaranteed a wonderful meal, at most places, but you may end up laughing more than you have in years.
Most of the mystery dinner theaters that I’ve been to have been very interactive. Many times, the characters and actors will be performing their skits while mingling amongst the patrons. You might find yourself being singled out or even taken up on stage for a few moments. If you don’t enjoy that sort of attention or entertainment, a mystery dinner theater may not end up on your “to do” list afterall. Of course, if it is a mystery dinner theater, you can be assured that the cast will be trying to solve a mystery. More than likely, it is a murder. You might be one of the suspects as you sit and dine on your lavish meal. If you’re looking for a fun work party for your employees, that may be a great time for everyone. Most dinner theaters will go out of their way to accommodate large groups of people.
I did venture to a mystery dinner theater that required guests to be there one hour before serving the meal. For that hour, guests were moved from room to room to find and compare clues, meet actors and try to figure out the mystery. Each room had different appetizers and events taking place. That hour went incredibly fast and had most people in fits of laughter before it was time to be seated. As the meal was being served, those actors appeared on stage to perform skits and actually solve the mystery. Different guests were called upon to share their clues with everyone and give their speculations. By the end of the evening, you didn’t want to leave and had shared laughs with complete strangers. My husband had initially balked at paying $50 per person to attend, but as we were leaving he commented that it had been well worth the money.
Every mystery dinner theater may be set up differently. If they weren’t, after going to one, you wouldn’t need or want to go to them anymore. Do yourself a favor though, and check one out. Take some friends with you, or make some new friends while you’re there.
