Who hasn't heard the phrase it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye? If you don't play a sport or outdoor activity, at least you surely have as a kid. We are all familiar with the joys of roughhousing. Even the most bookish, geeky, and emotionally reserved among us have at times loved to horse around with our friends. What we don't understand as kids, however, is how much anxiety our fun and games can cause our poor parents. As a rule, the more fun the child is having, the more carefully he must be supervised. All this supervision can wear out the most dedicated of parents, leaving them drained and grouchy and evening.
A lot of people like to bemoan the Internet, but one thing you can say for it is that it sure helps keep children distracted! Don't get me wrong – I don't want to have my kids on the computer for more than a couple hours a day, but those couple hours are invaluable to my mental health and sanity. Without all of the fun and free games online for them to play, I don't know what I would do!
It isn't that fun and games online don't require a certain supervision. God knows that the Internet has its own risks! With online predators, inappropriate materials, viruses, spyware, and all of the other hazards of the online Internet community, a parent really needs to keep up on technology in order to keep his or her kids safe. Nonetheless, watching your child online is much easier than watching them in a playground. After all, no matter where they go on the Internet, they are always right in front of your eyes.
Most of the time, Internet fun and games are a simple distraction which teaches your child nothing. They just provide a way for him or her to kill time while you relax. If you look carefully, however, you can find kids online entertainment that serves a higher function. Nowadays, there are more and more online websites that provide more than just entertainment. They can actually educate your child while entertaining them! Best of all, the majority of the children sites cost little or nothing. Fun and game playing outdoors, after all, teach kids coordination and cooperation, as well as helping them to keep in shape. Why shouldn't online games also do something for them? Childhood is a time to play, but it is also a time to learn. Why not combine them both?
