All About Electric Space Heaters

   By: Baily Richards

When winter hits most people's number one concern is how to stay warm. If a home is drafty this becomes more of a challenge. Although turning up the thermostat does help, certain rooms still feel chilly. Electric space heaters are ideal for helping heat up a small space such as a bedroom or garage.

As long as there is an outlet nearby one of these can be used. Some parents purchase one for use after the birth of a baby. This is particularly common during the winter months. Most electric space heaters can be set up straight out of the box and can keep an infant toasty warm when placed in the same room. Because many parents set up the crib in their room for the first few months of the baby's life this is a great idea.

They also work just as well when placed in a kitchen or living room. Anywhere where a draft is felt these can make a noticeable difference. Most models come with different temperature settings which range from low steady warmth to a much stronger heat. With different sizes also available they can heat any room regardless of its size.

Safety is always an issue when there is an electrical appliance running. With most of the newer models of electric space heaters there is a built in thermostat which prevents overheating. They are also built to only stay on in the upright position. This means if an overly excited child or pet happens to run into the space heater and knocks it over, it will immediately shut off. This greatly reduces the chances that electric space heaters will cause a fire.

There are a few general common sense safety measures to remember. One is to not place the heater on a flammable surface. Putting electric space heaters on top of a bed or chair isn't a wise idea. They should be placed either on a table or the floor. Also it's important to never use any electrical appliance near water. Although you can certainly use electric space heaters in a chilly bathroom, they should not be close to any of the water sources including the sink, toilet or bathtub.

The price varies depending on the brand as well as the size. If you are planning on only heating a small space you certainly don't need to invest in one of the more expensive electric space heaters. It's good to purchase one during the warmer summer months as you can expect to pay more when the weather turns colder as they'll be much more in demand. Once you've got it home you'll be ready to face winter's chill by staying nice and warm.
