From the moment we have a child of our own; it's our duty to begin educating him/her. As we all know, school plays a major role here, but not nearly the role we do as parents. It all starts with reading. This is the first thing we can offer our little ones as far as education goes. We can't get them to stand up and go use the bathroom, clean their plate and stick it in the sink, or even write a sentence at first. But, we definitely can read to them from the very day they're born. I have been reading children stories to my daughter for the past eight years. Even though she can read on her own now at a certain level, she still prefers me to read to her on a regular basis. Apparently it's addictive!
When searching for books with your children, it's imperative to give them some say. Okay, so they're 3 years old, and you don't want them to choose a book that's beyond their age group. Then only present them with the children stories that suit their age group. This way any choice is fine. Don't give them other options. The fact that they will be picking out their book will make a world of difference. Too often we hear kids say, "I hate reading" or "I'd rather watch TV than hear a story." NOT in my house! My daughter never says this and there's a good reason. My wife and I have read children stories to her as long as she can remember, and it gets her excited. She'll always choose it over movies or television shows. Since I love scary films and books, I introduced her to scary stories on a kid's level. Goosebumps are all the rage in this house now. We have no trouble relating and enjoying the same kind of children stories. I read her a new Goosebumps story every week. She can't get enough of them. And when I feel that she's been watching too much TV, I just say, "We should read a story instead" and she turns it off automatically. Reading to your kids truly can be fun.
