Invitations And Announcements

By: Rory Francis

My mother has always been a stickler for details. We lived on a farm and did not have a fancy house, yet every Sunday dinner was made fancy and special by mom. Many times on Sunday’s we would have relatives come to eat with us. It did not matter if there were fifteen or five around the table, Sunday was the day that the china and linens were used.

On Saturday evenings before mom went to bed she would bring out the china, good silverware and cloth napkins and set the table. She always made sure that the table settings were properly done and that each of us kids knew how to set a proper table. Mom made sue we knew all about the social graces. Everything from setting a table to invitations and announcements were very important to mom. I find that many of her lessons still influence the way I do things.

I still send out invitations and announcements for different events that occur. Some of my co-workers laugh at me. They say that this is what email is for. It is true I have received several emailed invitations and announcements, but to me they are not as special as receiving the cards in the mail. For the birth of each of my children, for each of their birthday parities and for their engagements and weddings I have saved all of the invitations and announcements that were sent out. These are wonderful memories for them to have in their scrapbooks. They can physically touch them and show them to their children and grandchildren. This may seem unimportant, but I know that now that my mother has passed away I get a great deal of comfort out of touching the invitations and announcements that she sent out regarding the special events in my life. Having the cards that she touched and saved for me is allowing me to keep her memory alive. She is the one that taught me about placing things in scrapbooks. She did not always have the time to paste things in the books in a timely fashion, but she kept everything together and periodically she would bring out the books and we would go through the things that she had kept and we would secure them in the pages. Mom had a book that had mementos of her life with my father. Along with invitations and announcements she had ticket stubs from concerts and plays as well as newspaper clippings of events that had impacted their lives. I am glad that I am keeping this tradition going with my children.
