Identification Cards - Secure Your Facility

By: Hunter Jones

Identification cards are becoming more important as most places try new and improved ways to keep their buildings secure. This was not something most thought about, but the past decade has taught us that we are not as safe as we thought we were. Even small companies are looking into ways to keep things safe, and though there are many things they can do, having cards that only allow access to those who work in a building is one way to keep the undesirables out for security reasons.

I once worked in a data processing center, and we had identification cards that we had to use to get into the building. This system worked well for where I worked because it was not a place where customers were coming in and out. It was strictly employee only. Our identification cards allowed us to get in and out of the building, and it was also used to keep track of our time. This made them more cost effective because they took care of two important things at once with one system.

For those who want to get identification cards for their office or business, there are many choices out there. Some are more secure than others. Though there are many from which to choose, it is important to find something that is secure and hard to duplicate. A good identification card will be one that is impossible to make even if someone else where to have the same software. Most have picture identification cards, and these should be more secure if there is someone checking them on the way in to the building, or if a scanner is being used.

The very best type of identification cards are the type that has a magnetic strip to hold information. Though these are more expensive, they are more secure and harder to duplicated. The information on this type of identification card should be unique and it should be hard for anyone to try to make one without having access to the company software and the information about the system that allows entry. These can be used to keep track of hours, much like the one I used, and they can also keep track of many other things as well. Though there will be some employees here and there that might lose these, most hang on to them rather well when they are holding more than one purpose.
