Holidays In Cornwall - Let The Festivities Begin!

The Cornish people have always been proud of their rugged scenery, maritime history and Celtic roots. The county has long been a tourist destination and there are many attractions. The area's economy relied on tin mining in the past but tourism is very important now. Holidays in Cornwall mean long walks on the beach or over the cliffs and an exploration of Cornish culture. There is even a Cornish language that local people are keen to preserve.

The resort of Newquay is the most important place in the UK for surfers. The waves here are superior to other British locations and there is a whole surfing industry here for making, selling or hiring boards. International surfing competitions are held on Fistral Beach. There is also an annual custom car event that attracts nostalgic petrol heads. The area is a magnet for young people and there's lots of nightlife to entertain them with some of the UK's most famous DJs appearing. Perranporth is another center for surfers and it also plays host to a yearly Celtic Festival.

A more tranquil experience awaits at the Eden Project near St.Austell. Since its opening in the 1990s, it has been one of Britain's most frequented attractions. The area is divided into different types of environment and has a collection of plants from all over the world. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, making use of sculptures. The Eden Project is on the agenda for the majority of people taking holidays in Cornwall.

Truro is the largest place in Cornwall and has an old world charm, complete with a Gothic style Cathedral and cobbled streets. This market town contains the Royal Cornwall Museum, displaying the local history of the area. There's entertainment too with clubs, restaurants and bars.

St. Ives is a seaside resort known for its artistic connections. Holidays in Cornwall can take in the best contemporary art on show. The Tate St. Ives gallery is a branch of the Tate Gallery based in London and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden houses another internationally known collection. The town has long been home and holiday retreat to a number of famous painters and sculptors.

The town of Tintagel is a favorite spot for people interested in the legends of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. There are the remains of a12th century castle here and some historians claim that Arthur resided here. It's easy to get carried away with the romance and mystery of it all whilst on holidays in Cornwall. Celtic and Roman ruins add to the allure of the place.

Falmouth is a pretty town with an attractive harbor and several Georgian houses. It is a favorite location for recreational boating and water sports. At the end of the day on holidays in Cornwall, it's time to tuck into a Cornish Pasty, the traditional meat and vegetable pie.
